How to Apply for the TSA Precheck - Airport

Nothing is more frustrating than the security process when you’re traveling. Long lines and security procedures make you feel as though you must arrive far too early when you’re planning on flying–and there’s no quick way to shorten your wait time. Here’s the good news: with TSA Precheck, you can be approved ahead of time for your flights, especially if you’re a frequent flyer. Before you know it, you’ll be moving straight through that line and avoiding the most difficult part of your flight.

Know Your Airline

TSA Precheck isn’t offered by every airline. If you want to qualify, your flight must be on an airline that permits TSA Prechecks. These include:

  • Aeromexico
  • Air Canada
  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Allegiant Airlines
  • Cape Air
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Ethihad Airways
  • Hawaiian Airways
  • Sun Country
  • United Airlines
  • Virgin America
  • WestJet
  • JetBlue Airways
  • Seaborne Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines

If you’re flying on a different airline, go ahead and ask about TSA Precheck when you book. It might just be the difference between a long wait and hurrying right on through.

Complete the Application

The TSA Precheck application can be filled out online. This is, however, only the beginning of the process. Once you’ve filled out your application, you’ll need to bring all of the relevant documentation to an enrollment center. While walk-ins are permitted, scheduling an appointment will ensure that you’re able to get in and out of your appointment in a timely manner. Your appointment can be scheduled online or by calling  (855) 347-8371 between 8 am and 10 pm Monday through Friday.

At Your Appointment

In order to qualify for the TSA Precheck Program, you’ll need to prove that you are a US Citizen, US National, or permanent resident. Make sure that you have:

  • Your driver’s license
  • Your current passport, if you have one or are traveling out of the US
  • Your birth certificate
  • $85 to pay the fees associated with acquiring your Known Traveler Number

If you’re missing these papers, there are other forms of identification which may also be acceptable. A full list of those papers can be found here.

How Does It Work?

When you enroll in the TSA Precheck program, you’ll be given a Known Traveler Number (KTN). When you work with one of the participating airlines named above, you’ll be able to add your KTN to your boarding pass. This ensures that you’ll be able to pass more smoothly through security without removing your belt and shoes, cleaning out your pockets, and many of the other inconveniences associated with security checks at the airport.

Who Needs a KTN Through the TSA Precheck Program?

Individuals who are taking a single flight or do not regularly spend time traveling through airlines don’t need a KTN. Those who travel on a regular basis, whether for business or pleasure, however, can experience all the benefits of having a KTN and passing easily through security checks. The KTN is only valid for 5 years. After that time, it will need to be renewed. Felons and those who have violent crimes won’t be able to attain a KTN. It’s also important to note that several individuals who are already part of trusted traveler groups won’t need a KTN in order to streamline their travel.

Saving time at the airport is incredibly valuable to many individuals who struggle to arrive on time, get through security checks, and make it to their planes. The more time you spend in the air, the greater the value a KTN will have for you. While the application process takes time out of your busy schedule, you’ll only have to complete it once; after that, security checks at the airport will be a breeze! For regular travelers, applying for the TSA Precheck procedure will streamline travel, making it easier and more practical to fly than ever before.
