Flamenco Beach: Gorgeous Jewel of The Caribbean

Flamenco Beach is located on the Isla de Culebra, which is just to the east of Puerto Rican mainland. The beach features pristine white sand and occupies a strip of land in the northeast corner of the island along the Bahia Flamenco bay, with the Culebra Nature Reserve directly to the northwest and the Flamenco Lagood directly to the south.

Flamenco Beach has been rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by various media outlets such as the Discover Channel, CNN and TripAdvisor. It also holds a Blue Flag rating from the Foundation for Environmental Education, which means it has met rigorous sustainability standards including water purity and beach safety.

Getting To Flamenco Beach

The quickest access to Flamenco Beach is through the nearby town of Dewey, which has a ferry service that runs daily from the city of Fajardo on the main island. Fajardo is located in the main island’s northeast corner and is accessible by following Route 3 from San Juan or Carolina. Reservations can be made Monday through Friday, but weekends are first-come first-served.

Culebra also has an airport that has daily flights to and from the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Carolina. The Culebra airport is located a few miles south of the beach and taxi service is available.

Flamenco Beach Features

Flamenco Beach has been recognized as a world-class beach for years now, and has an appropriate level of services. Stationed up and down the beach are lifeguard towers, restrooms and showers, and there is also a regular security patrol. Swimming areas are clearly marked with buoys, and reef diving is available at a number of spots.

Food is also readily available from a number of kiosks. Vendors tend to sell local favorites like tropical fruit smoothies and alcoholic beverages, banana and plantain fritters, arepas, empanadas and the famous fried Puerto Rican tacos.

The beach is highly walkable as it is only half a mile in total length. Scenic hiking is close at hand in the Culebra Nature Reserve to the west and Punta Flamenco to the east. The waters are crystal clear, offering views of colorful tropical fish such as the multicolored parrot fish and the blue tang. A wide variety of seabirds are also seen during nesting season in the summer.

While the natural beauty is more than reason enough to visit, there is one additional very unique attraction at the beach — two Sherman tanks abandoned by the United States military when they stopped using the area for training in the 1970s. With no one wanting to go to the expense of removing them, the tanks were left to sit and rust over the years. In their desire to make them less of an eyesore, the locals began covering them in art and graffiti. This has become an ongoing tradition, with new art periodically added to liven the tanks up.

Places To Stay Near Flamenco Beach

The closest lodgings to the beach are various small villas and casitas. The Calebra Beach Villas are the closest possible, the only lodgings located directly on the beach. These are a mix of villas and apartments that come with full kitchens. Within a mile of the beach you can also find the Tamarindo Estates Beach Apartments, which offers similar lodgings.

The closest proper hotel is the Hotel Kokomo, located about two miles away. The Club Seaborne boutique hotel is located three miles away and offers both villas and one-bedroom units along with a Caribbean restaurant and bar on site.

Several resorts can be found on the main island in Farajdo and the island of St. Thomas, which in both cases are about 20 miles away. Farajdo is home to two Waldorf Astoria resorts: the El Conquistador and La Casitas Village. St. Thomas is home to a wide variety of hotels as well as several resorts: the Emerald Beach Resort, Magens Point Resort and the Marriott Frenchman’s Cove and Frenchman’s Reef among them. These lodgings are within a short walk or taxi ride to ferries that access Culebra.
